Women in Marine Research

Outstanding achievements by renowned women in marine research have long remained hidden. A special exhibition opening on July 25, 2025, at the International Maritime Museum Hamburg will offer exciting insights into the creativity of these female scientists until the end of the year. The focus on Deck 7 is on eleven contemporary German female researchers. These are impressive examples of how women have been advancing maritime science – from time immemorial, often in the face of adversity.

The internationally renowned photographer Marzena Skubatz gives the portraits a unique character – also in the visual language of her close-ups. Among the researchers portrayed is also ºÚÁÏÊÓÆµ Director Katja Matthes.

Breaking the Surface is a joint initiative of the University of Hamburg and the , made possible with support from the and the .
