Ocean Dynamics

In the Ocean Dynamics research unit, we study the general large-scale circulation and smaller scale turbulence phenomena of the global oceans and their roles in the climate system. We investigate how different physical processes on various temporal and spatial timescales interact and how they contribute to changes in climate. This fundamental research is used in interdisciplinary applications to better understand impacts on biogeochemical and ecological systems, as well as societally relevant questions. Methodologically, we rely on a range of simplified and advanced, state-of-the-art ocean and climate models, novel data science methods, observational data and theoretical oceanographic concepts.
