Research statement

The ongoing decline of sea ice and the melting of ice sheets have profound, yet still insufficiently understood impacts on ocean circulation, the transport of biogeochemically relevant substances, and the climate. In this context, the polar regions are particularly sensitive, while at the same time acting as globally significant hotspots of change. My research therefore focuses on ocean circulation and the associated freshwater, nutrient, and trace element fluxes in polar systems. To this end, I investigate oxygen isotopes as well as the concentrations and isotopic signatures of trace elements and nutrients on continental shelves, in the open ocean, and within the marine cryosphere. I am particularly interested in the input of freshwater and meltwater, their downstream transport and far-field impacts beyond source regions, as well as in sea ice鈥搊cean interactions. Sea ice plays a key role in this regard 鈥 as a biogeochemical interface between the atmosphere and surface ocean layers, and between coastal regions and the open ocean. My work is embedded in international research initiatives and is driven by the development and application of state-of-the-art geochemical tracers.

Biography

I completed my B.Sc. (2008) and M.Sc. (2011) at the University of Freiburg before working for nearly two years as a geochemist in Colombia, where I focused on gold and platinum exploration and environmental impact assessments. After returning to Europe, I received my Ph.D. (2017) from Kiel University with a dissertation on the use of different oceanic tracers to study circulation and biogeochemical processes in the Arctic Ocean. As a postdoctoral researcher at 黑料视频, I expanded my expertise in oceanic tracers and contributed to large research initiatives such as GEOTRACES and MOSAiC. In 2020, I was awarded an international postdoctoral fellowship from the Ocean Frontier Institute and conducted research at Dalhousie University and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) on the effects of East Greenland on nutrient availability in the North Atlantic. I currently lead the Marie Curie project ICEotopes, which investigates the interplay of physical and biogeochemical processes at the sea ice鈥搊cean interface and, following an international phase at WHOI and the University of Bristol, is now being continued at 黑料视频.
