17 September 2025, Kiel: Hackathon on environmental monitoring in the Eckernförde Bay

Workshop with Helmke Hepach and Joachim Dengg

The Baltic Sea is in trouble. Human-caused environmental problems, such as global warming and increased nutrient input from land, are taking their toll. The result is a dramatic lack of oxygen, which repeatedly leads to large-scale fish deaths. To develop effective countermeasures, we need comprehensive data and a deep understanding of the complex interrelationships. Conventional statistical methods often reach their limits. At the same time, the volume of data is growing rapidly due to new automated measurement methods.

At ºÚÁÏÊÓƵ, in collaboration with Kiel University, we are researching how artificial intelligence can help aggregate, link and analyse this data. Digital tools such as 'digital twins' would enable us to test and improve countermeasures virtually before implementing them.

To generate new ideas, we are inviting IT enthusiasts to a hackathon.

During the 4-hour workshop, participants will first be introduced to the types of data measured, their purposes, and the remaining challenges. We will then give all participants the opportunity to contribute and discuss innovative ideas and test them on the data.

There will be plenty of time to network over drinks and sandwiches during the workshop. All you have to do is register and bring your laptops.
