Marine coastal areas are important ecosystems that have a significant role in global matter
cycling, biodiversity but also local economies (e.g. fisheries, tourism, etc.). However, marine
coastal habitats are particularly vulnerable to anthropogenic-induced environmental changes.
The effects of increasing atmospheric CO2 concentrations and associated temperature
increases, oxygen depletion and ocean acidification are leading to changes in marine matter
cycles, microbial activity, biodiversity and the capacity to store carbon in the long term. The
work of the proposed research cruise is part of the BMBF funded DAM missions
PrimePrevention " Marine Extreme Events & Natural Hazards " and the BfN funded (in planning)
POC project. The investigations are to be carried out in the Kiel Bight and extend from the
Flensburg Fjord to Fehmarn. On the one hand, the temporal and spatial extent of hypoxic and
sulfidic bottom waters, as well as the factors leading to the formation and upwelling of sulfidic
bottom waters will be investigated (PrimePrevention). On the other hand, carbon inventories
in sediments and sedimentation rates are to be determined on an area-wide basis for the
German EEZ in the Baltic Sea (BfN POC project).
